Help!

One of my co-workers is writing on article for a local "Green-zine".  The topic is "Why My Grandmother was Green".  Any memories out there to share?

My grandmother was green because she was poor. When she and my grandfather wanted to splurge, they bought paper towels, which they used, rinsed, hung up to dry and used again.

My Grandmother(s) were both dead before I was born, but my Mama was (and is) green before green was cool. Let's see... We grew all our own vegetables and canned them for the winter months. We reused EVERYTHING - my favorite is the used milk jugs. A good wash, then fill it halfway up with water and freeze it. Take it out of the freezer, fill with (well) water, and you have cold water to drink all day long in the tobacco patch. I could go on for days - sometimes when I think about how far removed my "disposable this" "instant that" life is now from what it was when I was growing up, I get all sad and achy inside...

My grandmother saved her tiny soap slivers and melted them into a new bar of soap. I find myself sabing my thumbnail size soap slivers and pressing them together. She never tossed out nylons with runs, she actually darned with needle and thread. In the winter when it was too cold to hang clothes on line to dry she strung clothesline thru the house. She never used paper towels or paper napkins and never once turned on the sindow air conditioner her grown children insisted on installing.
